Bandon, Oregon: Coastal Family Fun

Every once in a while, you run across a place in your travels that is undiscovered and unspoiled. Bandon, Oregon is such a place.

Located along the Southern Oregon Coast is a little gem of a town called Bandon-by-the -Sea.  We discovered it on a road trip we took for spring break with the kids.  These are just a few of our personal snap shots and my brief thoughts on the place.

We’ve spent a lot of time on the Oregon Coast up north around Cannon Beach and Seaside, but decided somewhere off the the Beach’n path was in order.  We wanted privacy, absolute relaxation, serene beach time and quintessential coastal…We got exactly that in Bandon, Oregon.

A Coastal Beauty…

This somewhat hidden seacoast town is sure to delight you with its charm, scenic beauty, rich opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and its quaint coastal atmosphere.

The scenic beauty which Bandon offers is unparalleled. Enjoy birding, surfing, crabbing, fishing, mushroom picking…and so much more!

Bandon, Oregon is 90 miles north of the California border,  five hours by car from Portland, Oregon and about nine hours from San Francisco.  It’s slight isolation is what keeps it just the way the locals like it.

Bandon Town Pier…

One of the best places to hang out is around the town pier and harbor located in the Port of Bandon.  Recently redone, it’s a treat to stroll the wooden docks and admire the artwork and sealife themed wood carvings.  (Note the crabbing pier in the background.)

You can also go crabbing right off the dock with your own or rented gear.  In fact, Tony’s Crab Shack will cook it up for you right there!  Doesn’t get much fresher than that!

Fresh Fish and Chips?  Try Bandon Fish Market.  Need dessert? Head over to Coastal Mist for some SURPRISINGLY indulgent sweets.

The downtown area is small with wonderful shops, art galleries and food bite havens.  Search for fudge and salt water taffy, admire hand-crafted model ships, find a photo treasure…it’s an easy walk through town with friendly shop owners.  Some are open only seasonally and most close quite early.

We stayed at The Best Western Inn at Face Rock.  Next time we will rent a beach house!

Bandon Beaches…

The beaches are what you would expect in the Pacific Northwest:  uncrowded, a little chilly, cool water temps, but perfect for hanging out, looking for shells, and a cold water swim!

Bandon Oregon:  Things to Do…

This is not a place to come if you are looking for a hopping nightlife and unbounded commercial ventures for entertainment.  It’s a place that rides the ebb and flow of the tides taking advantage of it’s location along the sea for scenic beauty, ocean/fishing adventures and believe it or not, golf.  Bandon Dunes (a top ranked public golf course) is near-by.

Coos Bay is up the road about 30 minutes and after that, sand dunes…miles and miles of coastal sand dunes fit to take on any ATV or dirt bike!

It’s a wonderful gateway in fact to the entire Oregon Coast.  If you get all the way to Florence, Oregon, Mo’s is a MUST eat at restaurant.  Skip the menu, get the chowder.

Coastal Comfort…

Lastly, hope that you get a stormy Oregon Coast day.  Snuggle up with a blanket, fire, hot chocolate and beach view, then enjoy the show!

Great place, great family trip!  Bandon, Oregon is on my short list of places I would love to retire to.  Go, but shhhhh, don’t spoil the secret.
